South Oak Cliff navigated a challenging second half at the legendary Cotton Bowl, ultimately fending off Melissa's comeback attempts to clinch a 35-17 win (https://www.dallasnews.com/high-school-sports/football/2025/12/12/melissa-coach-credits-team-for-fighting-to-bitter-end-in-playoff-loss-to-south-oak-cliff/) in the 5A Division II state semifinals. As a two-time reigning champion with appearances in the last four 5A Division II state title games, SOC is now headed to AT&T Stadium for its fifth straight state final, extending a remarkable legacy that kicked off in 2021. That inaugural year marked Dallas ISD's first acknowledged football state title since 1958, a milestone that redefined expectations for the program.
The team successfully defended its crown the next season and now stands poised to capture a third championship in just four years after overpowering Melissa (https://www.dallasnews.com/high-school-sports/schools/melissa/football/2025/schedule/).

“It sort of feels routine at this point,” remarked South Oak Cliff coach Jason Todd, capturing the team's seasoned confidence.
Soc built a commanding 35-10 lead by halftime, fueled by four touchdowns from Mikail Trotter and a resolute defensive stand on the natural grass of this historic field. The third quarter remained scoreless for both sides, adding to the tension.
Melissa's quarterback Brett Holloway broke through early in the fourth quarter with a 12-yard rushing touchdown, narrowing the gap to two scores. That proved to be the lone tally in the second half.
Isaiah Udom clinched the victory for SOC with his second interception of the evening, coming just 21 seconds before the buzzer in the fourth quarter.
Trotter powered through for 118 of the team's 135 rushing yards, while quarterback Jayden Williams delivered a flawless performance, completing 15 of 18 passes for 153 yards. Melissa amassed 341 total offensive yards compared to SOC's 288, yet three turnovers – those costly mistakes like fumbles or interceptions – proved decisive.
In this, the third showdown between the squads since 2022 (https://www.dallasnews.com/high-school-sports/schools/south-oak-cliff/football/2025/schedule/), emotions boiled over with multiple player altercations. The skirmishes escalated to the point where coaches intervened, and a player was finally ejected late in the game. To top it off, the teams skipped the traditional post-game handshake.
“I believe it stemmed from both sides at various moments,” Todd explained. “I remind the guys that if we're the victors, we've got another match ahead. You must stay composed and avoid getting provoked, but equally, you can't start the provocation yourself.”
And this is the part most people miss: South Oak Cliff has now claimed victory in all three playoff encounters with Melissa, including Friday's at the Cotton Bowl. Todd shared that he and Melissa's coach Matt Nally mutually chose this venue.
“It doesn't give us a home-field edge,” Todd noted. “We just wanted to focus on playing the game and not get sidetracked by extras.”
SOC stumbled in the 2023 and 2024 5A Division II state finals, falling short against Richmond Randle, the current 5A Division II defending champion who cruised past Boerne 40-16 on Friday. This sets up a rematch where SOC can seek redemption for last year's 38-35 defeat.
“A ton,” Trotter reflected when asked about what might have changed that outcome. “Lots of errors, but we're correcting them.”
That loss to Randle was an anomaly for SOC's usually impregnable defense, which has been unstoppable in 2025 – blanking all district rivals and limiting any Class 5A opponent to no more than 18 points.
From the very first game of the season, this SOC squad showed championship pedigree. They kicked off 2025 with a 41-31 triumph over five-time champion Galena Park North Shore, who reached the 6A Division I semis this year. The following week, they nearly upset 6A Division I semifinalist Duncanville in a close 35-28 loss. To cap their non-district schedule, SOC edged powerhouse Longview 20-17, another 6A giant.
But the program's hoped-for pinnacle awaits next week against Randle.
“I anticipate an epic showdown between two top-notch, expertly coached squads,” Todd predicted. “Our goal is simply to outscore them by one point.”
