Bold claim: A Brazilian woman with family connections to a White House official will be released from ICE custody while challenging possible deportation. A judge in Concord, New Hampshire, ruled on Monday that Bruna Ferreira, 33, who has ties to Karoline Leavitt (the White House press secretary), will be released to await proceedings. Ferreira, who has lived in Massachusetts for many years and was previously engaged to Leavitt’s brother, Michael, was arrested by ICE while en route to pickup her 11-year-old son in New Hampshire on November 12, after being stopped in Revere, Massachusetts.
Subsequently transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana, Ferreira received a release on a $1,500 bond following a ruling by an immigration judge, according to her attorney, Todd Pomerleau.
The attorney emphasized that the defense argued Ferreira posed neither a danger nor a flight risk, and the government did not contest that point or press an appeal. Nevertheless, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson described Ferreira as a "criminal illegal alien" and asserted she faced arrest for battery, an accusation her lawyer denies. The DHS spokesperson added that Ferreira would have periodic, mandatory check-ins with ICE to ensure compliance with the release terms, and reaffirmed the agency’s broader mission to remove those unlawfully present in the U.S. as efficiently as possible.
Pomerleau noted that Ferreira arrived in the United States as a toddler and later enrolled in Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the Obama-era policy shielding many young immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. He also said Ferreira is in the process of applying for a green card.
Karoline Leavitt, who grew up in New Hampshire, ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2022 and later served as Trump’s spokesperson during his 2024 campaign before joining him at the White House.
